This Is How You Leave a Legacy

Jim Rohn shares nine principles necessary for a successful life and a lasting legacy.

Jim Rohn, the philosopher who has left an indelible legacy of time-proven principles and wisdom, shares his secret for making an impact.  "You know me, I am a philosopher. I love principles. Yes, actions are great and I talk about them regularly, but the important stuff is what lies underneath—the principles," Rohn says. Here are the principles he says we must commit to in order to leave the legacy we desire:

1. Life is best lived in service to others. This doesn’t mean that we do not strive for the best for ourselves. It does mean that in all things we serve other people, including our family, co-workers and friends.

2. Consider others’ interests as important as your own. Much of the world suffers simply because people consider only their own interests. People are looking out for number one, but the way to leave a legacy is to also look out for others.

3. Love your neighbor even if you don’t like him. It is interesting that Jesus told us to love others. But he never tells us to like them. Liking people has to do with emotions. Loving people has to do with actions. And what you will find is that when you love them and do good by them, you will more often than not begin to like them.

4. Maintain integrity at all costs. There are very few things you take to the grave with you. The number one thing is your reputation and good name. When people remember you, you want them to think, “She was the most honest person I knew. What integrity.” There are always going to be temptations to cut corners and break your integrity. Do not do it. Do what is right all of the time, no matter what the cost.

5. You must risk in order to gain. In just about every area of life you must risk in order to gain the reward. In love, you must risk rejection in order to ask that person out for the first time. In investing you must place your capital at risk in the market in order to receive the prize of a growing bank account. When we risk, we gain. And when we gain, we have more to leave for others.

6. You reap what you sow. In fact, you always reap more than you sow—you plant a seed and reap a bushel. What you give you get. What you put into the ground then grows out of the ground. If you give love you will receive love. If you give time, you will gain time. It is one of the truest laws of the universe. Decide what you want out of life and then begin to sow it.

7. Hard work is never a waste. No one will say, “It is too bad he was such a good, hard worker.” But if you aren’t they will surely say, “It’s too bad he was so lazy—he could have been so much more!” Hard work will leave a grand legacy. Give it your all on your trip around the earth. You will do a lot of good and leave a terrific legacy.

8. Don’t give up when you fail. Imagine what legacies would have never existed if someone had given up. How many thriving businesses would have been shut down if they quit at their first failure? Everyone fails. It is a fact of life. But those who succeed are those who do not give up when they fail. They keep going and build a successful life—and a legacy.

9. Don’t ever stop in your pursuit of a legacy. Many people have accomplished tremendous things later on in life. There is never a time to stop in your pursuit of a legacy. Sometimes older people will say, “I am 65. I’ll never change.” That won’t build a great life! No, there is always time to do more and achieve more, to help more and serve more, to teach more and to learn more. Keep going and growing that legacy!
These are core principles to live by if you want to become the kind of person who leaves a lasting legacy.

Meeting #22 and AGM held on 27 May 2014 at RSUC

The present committee's term was drawing to a close and this meeting combined the AGM where reports, finances were presented and a new committee duly 'elected' for the coming year. Our Acting President Robert Tan gave a nostalgic summing up of the year's activities, thanking everyone for their co-operation, camaraderie, effort in achieving Club targets.
Our finances are healthy albeit reduced due to purchase of a much-needed LCD projector and subsidising of our Installation Dinner, reported Treasurer Kay Ku. The 'new' team was elected and duly presented. President - Indra R; VPE - Ong Guan Leong; VPM - Irene S; VPPR - Shun; Secretary - Dilaasha; Treasurer - Chandran; SAA - Krishnan Kumar.

Incoming Committee (only VPM absent)

Our President, Chua Eu Chieh, though posted to Holland on work enrichment programme, surprised us by giving official pin-button momentoes to the present committee.

Part of Present Committee (with momentoes)
Next was Robert's surprise in awarding the Outstanding New TM to Dilaasha who though new, plunged into organising events, participated in speech contest and helped the Secretary (her mom) besides going through her CC speeches. Well-done and congrats to Dilaasha
Four prepared speeches were delivered. Interesting visual aids through slides and speech topics caught our attention, especially speeches by the younger TMs, Dilaasha and Arrchanaa.

Winners for the night's awards went to Krisnan Kumar for his speech on The Thief of Time and Stephen Francis for evaluating his speech.

Line Clear nasi kandar restaurant risks closure over licensing problem

Another nostalgic place for PD Toastmasters. We went to this place when we attended Past President Chua Eu Chieh's wedding in Penang Island. Food here is expensive and you have to line up quite long for food. Certainly NO LINE CLEAR.

Sungai Lembing Oh Sungai Lembing

This article in THE STAR brings back memories of our trip to the East coast. We should have more of this type of trips to strengthen the bond between us. Those who went, could feel the nostalgia in this article.

Sungai Lembing’s evolution from a tin-mining hub to a tourist destination

The Sungai Lembing Museum, opened in 2003, showcases exhibits from the tin mining industry that helped shaped the town’s history.
The Sungai Lembing Museum, opened in 2003, showcases exhibits from the tin mining industry that helped shaped the town’s history.

THE hamlet of Sungai Lembing, once known as the El Dorado of the East, has seen a glorious past.
The moniker suggests it was a lost city of gold but in reality, the town was the centre for one of the largest tin-mining operations in history.
For the better part of the 20th century, Sungai Lembing was a boom town — its land rich in subterranean tin deposits.

Meeting #20 held on 22nd April 2014 at RSUC

Just for the record, the previous meeting #19 was not reported in the blog.
The current meeting started promisingly with the Table Topics session, helmed by Indra R. who gave us a host of idioms and proverbs, recorded below for our perusal and further ruminations.
Sadly, our younger members especially were literally at a loss for words - reason, not that they were tongue-tied but have never heard of these expressions. This is a sign of our times, they are not to be blamed. Future TTMs take note, perhaps a suggestion could be this -  give them the idioms/proverbs, explain the meaning and significance behind these sayings and let the speakers' creativity flow from there.
IDIOMS - pulling my leg; spill the beans; feeling blue; an arm and a leg
PROVERBS - a picture paints a thousand words; necessity is the mother of invention; a chain is no stronger than its weakest link; a good mind possesses a kingdom; love me love my dog; a burden of one's choice is not felt.
There was only a prepared speech by Arrchaana who was doing her CC#6, elaborating on wealth (and its negative impact).

The meeting ended with the induction of our latest member and a reminder by Actin President, of the coming Saturday's joint contest with ALAM

Induction of new member Cheong Yit Meng with his mentor Tan Soo Guan

Next was the achievement of Indra R, and Anand V, winning the Area contest International Speech and Table Topics contest respectively. They next go on to compete at the Divisional level. Meeting #17 held on 11th March 2014 at RSUC

The meeting was started off by Acting President, Robert Tan and helmed by TOE Kay Ku. Table Topics session was another mind-sapping, probing affair with philosophically-slanted questions posed by our Dr Subbash. Our loyal and occasional member from Melaka, Kapt Khalid commented that he seemed to come when the good Dr happens to be the TTM and gets thrown unique topics. Anyway all speakers managed well according to the TTE Indra while the GE pointed out the speaker had the option to disagree with the topic and offer his own opinion.
TOE - Kay Ku
Our new member Krishna Kumar gave a winning IceBreaker speech, confidently, well-articulated and revealed that he is a trainer, no wonder. Well, we certainly look forward to more captivating speeches in the future. Robert Tan presented his prepared speech CC#5 (3rd round) on The Blame Game, with the timely message of 'Not Avoiding Responsibility in Combatting Social Ills." Then long MIA (missing in action) Jaya entertained us with possible scenarios of causes of airplane disasters - I'm convinced he must have at least undergone some simulator training in the past.

Our other role players for the night were :
GE - Chandran N; LE - Rosa Phua; Timekeeper - Kanaga; Ah Counter - Tan Soo Guan; Speech Evaluators - (1) Nageswary, (2) Ong Guan Leong; Refreshents - Yeoh Lian Geok.

This club event was successfully held with two participating in the International Speech and five in Table Topics. Our Treasurer, TM Kay Ku started off the contest in place of our VPE who, unfortunately was temporarily sidelined. Dilaasha showed much enthusiasm and spirit in talking about "Living Dangerously", challenging us to consider options outside our comfort zones while Indra gave a polished delivery, starting with a story on "Little Acts of Kindness". Our five Table Topics contestants were challenged to elaborate on "Don't Judge a Book by its Cover", an easy topic with wide possibilities for discussion.

Indra R  & Dilaasha S.  (International Speech Contestants)
GT Singham, Dilaasha, Anand V, Tan Ban Yeow, (four of five of the TT Speakers)

Thanks goes to our members who helped out - Contest Chair (Ong Guan Leong), Judges (Tan Lai Hock, Dr Subhassh, Rosa Phua), Ballot Counter (Yeoh Lian Geok), Timekeeper (Margaret Chuah), SAA (Lim Kheng Chiew) plus our contestants and members who turned up for the night.

Meeting #15 on 11th February 2014 at RSUC

It was celebration-themed meeting, a 2014 CNY HORSEy meet. None came dressed as horses but there were plenty of red fabric around plus red packets, oranges, cookies and the traditional yee sang dish during the meal break. TOE - KC Lim, introduced TM in a fresh, entertaining perspective flavoured with humorous comments. Well done.

Table topics was well-helmed by Indra G (for Guru) - topics ranged from lavishness of celebration to giving all to charity. The TTE was Margaret Chua who focussed on content, vocal variety and gestures.
Some of our TT speakers - LR Amy Siew, Anand, GT Singam, Kaladevi
Break included the tossing of yee sang for good luck and good fortune for the coming year.
Three prepared speeches were given - ShiYing 'frightened' the listeners to start flossing their teeth or else; Indra R (for Retired) narrated a descriptive episode of her lost dog; Guan Leong lightened the atmosphere with a humorous account of 'aging' suitably spiced with jokes.
We were also entertained by the first-time member, Krishna Kumar who cracked Chinese-themed jokes. I suspect we'll be seeing more of him in action soon. Other roles taken up were GE - Tan Soo Guan, LE - Kaladevi, Timekeeper - Rosa Phua, Ah Counter - Dr Subhassh.
Winners for the night were Stephen Francis - Best Table Topics Speaker AND Best Speech Evaluator while Indra R. bagged the Best Speaker award.
All agreed we had a good time and are looking forward to the next meeting on 25th February which will be the Club's International Speech and Table Topics contest.

Meeting #14 on 21st January 2014 at RSUC

How time flies! This was the second meeting in the new year; we have passed the half-way mark. In case you have not noticed, this meeting 14 out of 24 (possible).
It was a night of PLEASANT SURPRISES! First, we hosted 10 guests to our 16 members, surely? a record. Second, two guests signed up to join as members (to be confirmed?), impressed perhaps, by the way the meetings were run, the good, inspiring speeches delivered and genial fellowship atmosphere experienced; I'm sure all these collective efforts played a major contributing factor in how others perceive our club and the benefits of its programmes. Third, unexpected winners - read on.

The meeting opened with awarding of STARs to the PDTMC for achieving President Distinguished Club Status for the previous term, a significant feat and one to repeat this term. TOE Ong Guan Leong enriched the audience on the significant advantages of becoming a Toastmaster, displaying the various training manuals and monthly magazines. TTM Singham gave table topics themed around the celebrations of Asian festivals like Vesak, Deepavali, HR Puasa, Christmas and Chinese New Year. Dr Subhassh, the TTE commented favourably on the responses in terms of content and eye contact.
Our not-so-new Kanaga in his first CC speech introduced us to his growing up years in Sungei Petani, Kedah and how he eventually landed up in aircraft maintenance. Robert Tan talked about the current state of crime and need to be constantly vigilant in various ways. Dilaasha, warned us of the dangers of obesity, starting from childhood and the contributory factors leading to the condition in her presentation (with slides) on 'The Stuffed Child".

Speech evaluators were Kaladevi (back after a long spell), Nageswary, and Chandran, respectively for the three prepared speeches.

LE Indra G (G for guru, very apt) shared some of the good phrases used - mutually supportive, build on strengths, emotionally engaging, capture your imagination, allow us to digest, best foot forward, momentary lapse of concentration. These were spoken by by a few speakers and indicates the generally high level of English in the club. Well done and push the boundaries. The other role players were - Rosa Phua (Ah Counter, captured quite a bit of fillers), Loo Shi Ying (Timekeeper), Yeoh Lian Geok (General Evaluator).

The winners were definitely a surprise. Nagesary was the deserving double-winner, bagging the Best Table Topics Speaker as well as the Best Speech Evaluator. She needs to attend more meetings to show more of her capabilities to the other members aspiring to move on to higher levels of communication. Dilaasha came out the Best Speaker, showed much confidence in engaging the audience. Definitely, our hope for future Club speech contenders (anything to do with genes and inheritance here?).
Nageswary - the double winner
Dilaasha - Best Speaker
